Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these players from the swift completion of their appointed treks – inscription found on the General Post Office in New York City at 8th Avenue and 33rd Street
It’s amazing how the US postal service was able to predict the state of social media and gaming in 2010 but here we are, living up to the SCVNGR players creed. Last we told you of the goSmithsonian Trek, we were in the midst of the “Snowpocalypse”, a series of blizzards that entirely shut down the city. Now, here we are in DC for the Trek kickoff at the Smithsonian FolkLife Festival and we have hit the hottest week of the year so far with each day topping 98 degrees! I’m starting to think it’s me.
No inclement weather can change one thing: this trek is FUN. goSmithsonian and SCVNGR have teamed up to build an incredible trek through nine of the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall. From squid to diamonds, you’re guaranteed to find something you’ll love as you explore one of the foremost cultural institutions in the world with SCVNGR challenges at hand. And while you’re at it, the highest scorer on the trek will win an iPad! Want some details? I thought so:
Kickoff party: Saturday June 26th, Smithsonian Castle Commons at 9:30. The Trek starts at 10:00 and goes until 2:00, the winner will be announced at 2:30. RSVP resquested, sign up at: www.youngbenefactors.org/scvngr
Can’t come on Saturday? Never fear, you have another shot explore the Smithsonian. The goSmithsonian trek will run Between June 26th and July 24th for you to go to the museums, do challenges and of course, earn points. A final iPad will be awarded to the top scorer over 30 days on July 30th Hey, we mean business here in the SCVNGR museums department.
And we’re not the only ones excited about the trek! Read all about us on the Smithsonian blag. (They call it a “blog”, odd.) http://blogs.smithsonianmag.com/aroundthemall. Learn more about what we’re up to at the goSmithsonian site, www.gosmithsonian.com.
What better time than this to come to DC?! I promise, I’ll stay at SCVNGR HQ in Boston so that you get seasonable weather.
